Improving hull and propeller performance - an economic "No brainer"
Today, we are faced with a world that is increasingly being measured, quantified, and optimized. Information technology-driven business processes are transforming all industries – and that without a doubt includes the maritime industry.
With prevailing high bunker prices, anything that can help a ship operate more economically and profitably must be of the highest interest.
Improving hull and propeller performance is an effective and quick-win solution for ship owners seeking to boost the energy efficiency of their fleet. By use of simple, reliable and accurate measurements of the hull and propeller performances, owners can make both fuel-cost and greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions savings.
This evening’s presentations will highlight the road we are heading, and what we can expect in the future.
16:30 - 17:00 INNO+ project, by Niels Gorm Malý Rytter, Aalborg University
Aalborg University Copenhagen is from 2015-2018 part of a DK government and privately funded Blue Innoship research project on Vessel Performance Management together with 4 industrial partners: Vessel Performance Solutions, Force Technology and the 2 Danish Shipping Companies Torm and Lauritzen.
The research project aims at developing a vessel performance platform / solution including a strong vessel performance analysis engine, a set of relevant fuel efficiency KPIs and innovative ways of monitoring and displaying ship and fleet performance using available Noon report and Autolog data in the shipping companies.
The future vessel performance platform is to be built as an open standard so it can interface multiple data sources, modules or applications typically present in shipping companies across segments and vessels.
The effort of all project partners is expected to result in tangible improvements on various operational KPIs for the shipping companies, including hull and propeller performance, reductions in fuel consumption, operational costs, CO2 and NOX emissions etc. The presentation will explain research objectives and elements of the project, and it will provide examples on results obtained from the research / development and testing work carried out with the shipping companies and software vendors / consultancy companies so far.
17:00 - 17:30 Performance losses between hull and propeller - and what to do about it, by

The purpose of the presentation relates to relevance of Hull and Propeller Performance Analysis in fuel conservation and emission reduction initiatives for Ocean Going Vessels. This presenter will describe “CASPER”, a hull and propeller performance monitoring and analysis service and provide case studies of real ships of various types in which multiple hull and/or propeller cleanings and dockings were carried out and their discrete and overall effect on fuel efficiency.

Integrated vessel performance management system can be combined with manual and auto logged data, but the data has to be validated and analyzed with respect to the performance of the vessel. The system should be able to cover the complete voyage cycle and once data are captured they should be integrated into both performance management, environmental performance and reporting. An integrated system will reduce the workload on the vessels crew regarding logging of data for various purposes and make life easier in the daily reporting. A few case studies will be given with regard to the performance analyses.

Hull performance monitoring solutions offer significant fuel savings potential, a fact that is prompting growing interest from the maritime industry. ISO have recently developed a standard on measurement of changes in the hull and propeller performance. The presentation will explained why the ISO 19030 standard is needed, the contents in the standard and how it has been developed.
