Secure Information Sharing on Smartphones


The flexibility and computing power of modern smartphones and mobile platforms to install and execute various applications allows for a rich user experience, but also imposes several security concerns. Smartphones that are used both for private and corporate purposes do not separate the data and applications of different security domains.


For example, tablet computer based on smartphone operating systems like Apple's iPad are becoming a popular device for healthcare professionals. However, standard operating systems and software, as they are deployed on current smartphones, cannot protect sensitive data appropriately. So, accessing health records from mobile devices is often not secure. This is of particular importance because of the high security and privacy requirements for sensitive medical data.


This talk presents security architectures for the protection of sensitive data and secure information sharing on mobile phones. We first look at a generic solution tailored specifically to current mobile platforms with hardware security extensions.


Authentication data are protected by a dedicated security software, which leverages trusted hardware features of the phone and isolated application environments provided by a secure operating system. Then we present the design and implementation of a Trusted Virtual Domain (TVD) security architecture for smartphones. The TVD concept separates data and applications of different security domains and automates the security configuration on devices.


We build our solution on top of a secure microkernel and establish isolated instances of general-purpose smartphone operating systems like Android. Our results show that the TVD security architecture can be built and used on modern smartphones, but there are also limitations that we still have to address to improve the user experience.
