Walking robots and brain-like control systems

Join a fascinating lecture from the award winning scientist Dr. Poramate Manoonpong who puts intelligence into robots.
"Walking animals, like stick insects, cockroaches or ants, are able to perform a variety of movements and can traverse diverse terrains. During traversing they adapt their locomotion to deal with terrain changes and effectively navigate to find their goal in complex environments. Neurobiologists suggest solving these tasks with a combination of brain and biomechanics. In this talk I will present how we, inspired by neurobiology, develop brain-like mechanisms i.e., neural control, memory, and learning, and biomechanics for our multi sensori-motor robotic systems. Our approach allows the robots to effectively interact with the environment; thereby performing complex behaviors. These behaviors include adaptive locomotion on difficult terrains, a multitude of different walking patterns, proactive behavior, memory-guided behavior, and goal-directed behavior."
Dr. Poramate Manoonpong was born 1978 in Nan. After studying Mechatronics at Ravensburg-Weingarten University he gained a Ph.D. degree at Siegen University. He works as an Associate Professor of Embodied Artificial Intelligence at the University of Southern Denmark and as an Emmy Noether research group leader for "Neural Control, Memory and Learning for Complex Behaviors in Multi Sensori-Motor Robotic Systems" at BCCN, the University of Goettingen.
